You've probably heard the term "oxidative stress" before but let me tell you why you should pay attention to the oxidative stress in your body.
Oxidative stress is the negative effect of free radicals on your body. Free radicals are part of everyone's body however the build-up of free radicals can cause impaired function of healthy cells, prevent DNA repair and can directly damage DNA. The body that has excessive amounts of free radicals is at risk for various diseases. In fact, most chronic diseases have oxidative stress from free radicals as one of the main causes. Doing what you can to decrease the oxidative stress in your body will have a large role in helping you age gracefully and with as little disease as possible.
Top five ways to decrease your oxidative stress:
1. Eat fruits and vegetables. (At least 7 servings every single day! These are packed full of ANTI oxidants.)
2. Exercise. (Exercise temporarily increases your oxidative stress but improves it long-term, especially when paired with a health diet.)
3. Avoid toxins. (cigarette smoke, other carcinogens.)
4. Drink alcohol in moderation. (don't get drunk and avoid having more than 1-2 drinks a week)
5. Avoid processed foods.
There are plenty of other ways to decrease your oxidative stress but if you focus on getting those five as part of your lifestyle you'll be on the road to fighting oxidative stress and gracefully aging.
