How many times have you thought about working out but looked down at your watch and realized you just don't have time? There's a way you can get in a GREAT workout, torch some calories, improve your strength and fitness without having to leave your home. It's called high intensity interval training or HIIT (pronounced 'hit'). Very few styles of workouts can burn as many calories as a good session of HIIT while still helping you gain strength.
HIIT "is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods, until too exhausted to continue. " I suggest going into your HIIT session knowing that by the end of it you'll be exhausted and likely feel sick to your stomach if you're not used to this style of training. There are several ways to design a HIIT workout but I prefer to do 40 seconds of work followed by 20 seconds of rest. Any HIIT workout format will work as long as you're getting your heart rate elevated quickly and maintaining it for a short burst followed by a brief recovery period. Here's a sample workout- 40 seconds work/20 seconds rest -High Knees -Mountain Climbers -Jump Squats -Lunge Jumps -Push Ups Complete four times through for 20 minutes of exercise. So next time before you say you don't have time, remember all you need is 20 minutes and a little bit of space to move your body to get a GREAT workout completed.
