Open up your podcast app, look at the NY Times best seller list, listen to radio ads and you'll read or hear about several motivational speakers. It seems everywhere we turn there's another person there to motivate us. Even I'm here to try to motivate you to be healthy.
But here's the truth- we need to learn to motivate ourselves. Easier said than done though right? We get tired, discouraged and some days just plain blah. We encounter obstacles, failures and sometimes just fall flat on our faces while trying to pursue a goal. So how do we stay motivated to move towards our goals? First, write down what motivates you to pursue your goals. Maybe you want to be able to hike a tall mountain, travel the world when you retire, invest money for your children's college fund, give to a charity, spend more time with your kids, run a marathon, be a public speaker, get a promotion, be able to give of your time or money more, etc. Everyone has something that makes them "tick." After you've written down your motivation to reach your goal, just start moving. An object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest....you know where I'm going with this. Just get moving towards your goal and keep moving. Find little things to do every day to get you to your goal! Before you know it you'll gain some momentum! Use that momentum to make BIG strides towards your goal. Everyone has those days that they wake up stoked for life, ready to take on the world and "move the needle" as my husband would put it. Take advantage of those days that you have positive momentum and really focus your efforts on moving towards your goal. The more you move, the more momentum you'll have and the more momentum you have, the easier it'll be to motivate yourself to keep going even when you don't feel like it!! Don't rely on someone else's voice to motivate you. Find that inner voice that will keep you going and learn to listen.
